Memorial Day was started as an event to honor Union soldiers who had fallen during the American Civil War. After World War I, it was extended to include all men and women who have fallen during military action. Many Americans fly their flags at half mast and visit cemeteries and memorials. Memorial Day also marks the start to the summer vacation season with people attending sporting events, BBQ's, picnics and family get togethers.

Rumors of the escape of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his administration in "Manatee" now known as Bradenton, have Union troops swarming in search of the fleeing group. This historical moment in time comes alive with actors showcasing what life was like during the last events of the American Civil War in Florida. A military drill and calvary and military formations are planned along with the quieter daily life of the villagers, including daily home life, a ladie's tea, boat building, church services, children games, music, and more. The backdrop to this re-enactment are the lovingly restored period homes and buildings from the first settlers.
