Memorial Day - Anna Maria Island

Memorial Day Quote by Anna Maria Island Beach Life Blog

Memorial Day Weekend on Anna Maria island is a time for many to head out to the beach or relax in their tropical backyards, grilling some great food and enjoying the company of family. Let's not forget why we celebrate this holiday.

Memorial Day was started as an event to honor Union soldiers who had fallen during the American Civil War. After World War I, it was extended to include all men and women who have fallen during military action. Many Americans fly their flags at half mast and visit cemeteries and memorials. Memorial Day also marks the start to the summer vacation season with people attending sporting events, BBQ's, picnics and family get togethers.

If you are hankering for a little more history then head out to nearby Bradenton's Manatee Village Historical Park. This year marks the 150th Occupation of Manatee on May 22, 2015. with the Manatee Village Historical Park hosting a re-enactment of the year 1865.

Rumors of the escape of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his administration in "Manatee" now known as Bradenton, have Union troops swarming in search of the fleeing group. This historical moment in time comes alive with actors showcasing what life was like during the last events of the American Civil War in Florida. A military drill and calvary and military formations are planned along with the quieter daily life of the villagers, including daily home life, a ladie's tea, boat building, church services, children games, music, and more. The backdrop to this re-enactment are the lovingly restored period homes and buildings from the first settlers.
